Babson Financial Literacy Project Awarded Grant for HBCU Workshops

Listen

The Babson Financial Literacy Project (BFLP) has been awarded a one-year, $103,000 Nasdaq Foundation Grant to bring financial literacy workshops to students at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).

The pilot program, called “Closing the Financial Knowledge Gap for Students at HBCUs,” includes comprehensive personal finance workshops to teach critical financial skills in a community setting. BFLP-trained facilitators will run virtual workshops during the 2023–2024 academic school year as well as a boot camp at the end of the year, so HBCUs can continue the program on their own.

The BFLP helps high school and college students, as well as young adults in the wider community, acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for long-term financial independence and prosperity. An important part of the BFLP’s mission is to fill the financial literacy gap for underserved populations.

Since November 2018, the BFLP has conducted 276 financial literacy workshops and filled 11,400 workshop seats. To date, 94% of participants rate workshops as extremely or very helpful in building financial knowledge, and 92% report they are extremely or very likely to apply what they learned.
