The Future of Higher Education Relies on Collaboration

Stephen Spinelli on the Future of Higher Education

In an opinion piece published today in The Boston Globe, President-elect Stephen Spinelli, Jr., MBA ‘92, PhD, shared his insights into the path forward for colleges and universities.

Although colleges and universities face tremendous financial restraints and increasingly difficult market forces, Spinelli believes those that choose a path of collaboration and entrepreneurial thinking will thrive.

Collaboration is not completely new to institutions of higher learning. Research faculty have historically worked with colleagues at other universities to advance new knowledge in their fields. Consortiums of colleges and universities have arisen, including the Babson/Olin/Wellesley Three College Collaboration.

Moreover, Spinelli believes extensive partnerships of colleges with businesses and other nonprofits will thrive in the future. Through these actions, colleges will create a multidimensional education ecosystem that supports enhanced educational offerings at lower costs.
