Babson to Host Community-Wide Juneteenth Ceremony
The timing of Juneteenth 2020 needs little explanation. The United States is at a critical juncture in its pursuit of equality, and the moment to come together to plan a path to change is now.
This oldest national commemoration of the end slavery in the United States “will be marked during a decisive time in our country,” said Chief Inclusive Excellence Officer Sadie Burton-Goss in her invite to the community to Babson’s Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 19, at 11 a.m. EST.
Join us to learn more about this significant holiday, share thoughts on current race-related incidents, and discuss how we take action to make progress and keep the momentum going.
At this year’s ceremony, the Babson community will hear from esteemed alumni, staff, faculty, and student speakers, and discuss how we will take action toward a more inclusive society.
A Time for Change
Sponsored by the Diversity & Inclusion Council, Alumni and Friends Network, and MLK Jr. Legacy Day Committee, this year’s College-wide celebration “presents an opportunity to come together as One Babson to discuss where we are, how we got here, and where we need to go from here,” said Burton-Goss.
Attendees will include Trustee Amanda Strong ’87, and Aaron Walton ’83, CEO of Walton Isaacson. Walton will keynote the event and discuss how Juneteenth represents a failure of the application of the law, a reality that we continuously face today.
Current student Jaylen Bell ’21 also will share a next-generation perspective on racist violence, and the meaning of imagining a future as a student in our current world.
The ceremony will be highlighted by a breakout for group discussions on emotions and feelings at this moment in time, before returning to the larger group for closing remarks from Burton-Goss on the next steps we can take as individuals and as a community.
