David Akiba, a lecturer in photography at Babson College and a Boston-based photographer, has been teaching photography for more than 45 years. Akiba, whose interests and influences are widespread, says, “When I talk with students, I tell them the photo isn’t about the subject. It’s more about what you’re trying to accomplish. What do you want from the photograph? There should be an emotional response.” Inspired by one of his sons, a soloist with the Boston Ballet, Akiba recently photographed the troupe for almost a year. A sampling of photographs taken during the ballet’s 50th anniversary season follows. Akiba says, “The first six photos were made during the
Night of Stars
performance on Boston Common in September 2013. That event was attended by 55,000 people. The last two were made backstage at a
performance of
The Nutcracker
in December 2013.” More of Akiba’s work can be seen on davidakiba.weebly.com.
