Exploring the Future of Finance at Boston FinTech Week

Babson at Boston FinTech Week

Babson may be best known for entrepreneurship, but its finance program represents its largest undergraduate concentration and most common field for graduates. Earlier this month, students and alumni explored the future of finance during workshops and events at Boston FinTech Week, where the Stephen D. Cutler Center for Investments and Finance and Babson Boston played host throughout the four-day gathering of financial services tech professionals.

More than 1,800 attendees, including Babson students, faculty, alumni, and staff, gathered at Babson Boston to explore how increased access to data and technology will affect the future of financial services.

Current student, Matthew Apkarian MBA’20, signed up for the FinTech bootcamp workshop to supplement his finance coursework at Babson. He also is part of the Babson College Fund, and when not in class, serves as an investment data analyst at Fidelity.

“Getting to hear from esteemed industry professionals is always great, especially when we get the opportunity to ask questions about the state of the FinTech industry and potential catalysts,” said Apkarian.

Apkarian will receive a certificate for completing the workshop and plans to include it on his résumé moving forward.

A number of Babson graduates also play a role in finance industry disruption as founders of Boston FinTech companies, including Mike Massaro ’00, CEO of Flywire, which solves payment problems for businesses and institutions to empower new opportunities globally and locally.

“It is no surprise Boston has become a pillar city for FinTech companies like Flywire to continue to grow,” said Massaro. “As a proud Babson alumnus, it was a fantastic experience to join other great companies and institutions in making Boston FinTech week so successful! I look forward to seeing what Babson and Boston FinTech have in store for next year.”

“Through Boston FinTech Week, the Cutler Center continues to distinguish itself as an educational leader within the FinTech community, while also helping entrepreneurs gain access to infrastructure and capital needed to support their business,” said Patrick Gregory, managing director of the Stephen D. Cutler Center for Investments and Finance.

FinTech events are free and open to the community, and are an opportunity for Babson students to network with professionals and alumni working in the finance industry.
